| Just a quick reminder to everyone, that when you have the option to update, don't do it unless you've made a copy of your minecraft.jar first.
-----
With the 1.3 update just around the corner, I think it's time to start discussing the possible switch to a new map.
I know that there's some who are tired of the current map and are looking forward to something new, but there's also those who don't think we should start a new map just yet.
What I want to know is who wants a new map, who doesn't, and why. I'd also like to know everyone's opinions on the new large biomes world type. If you haven't tested it out, wait until the update is here and try it for yourself before giving an opinion. I'm sure some people might underestimate the size of the biomes.
I know that starting a new map means losing a lot of work that's been done, and that can be a pain, so before anyone makes any decisions I'd like to remind everyone that if we do switch I'll allow everyone to fill two or three big chests with materials for me to carry over, and any buildings or projects that are being worked on if it's possible to do so. (Single buildings are usually no problem) -----
My opinion doesn't matter in this decision, but here it is anyways.
My vote goes towards starting a new map.
- There may still be some empty space left, but it's not going to take long before there's no decent land left or materials to mine. It makes it less likely that any new members will stick around when they have to travel across a map to just get started.
- I feel the map has been around for a decent amount of time, and those of us who were here from the start are looking forward to having a new world to explore. We'd have to switch eventually. The longer we stay here the more everyone would have to lose.
- I'd like to add that I'd be intested in the large biomes world. I'll be setting the border a bit further out, so I'd be able to get a nice variety of biomes in it. - It would just be nice to actually be surrounded by the biome you're in, rather than stand in the center and see a desert on one side, and a jungle on the other. Plus it has need for actual exploration, a higher number of villages, temples, and pyramids to find, and a more interesting world generation.
-----
I'd be interested to hear everyone's thoughts on the subject. Afterall, this is everyone's decision. Not just mine.
Also, I know that not everyone checks these forums regularly, so I would appreciate it if everyone could please copy/paste the link to this thread to anyone in the server who might not have seen it.
Thanks!
Votes so far: ----- New map: 11 No new map: 6

| I for one would like to go to the 1.3 as soon as possible and i would be fine to just bring one chest over and one building, what i would do is build the house i want to bring over with my materials inside dev if that's cool, one large chest and one i find a place for my town you could just place the house where i want it, as for the biome's i would defintly like to see large ones especially if we plan on making a real winterfall, i am thinking we could seround winterfall with a protective wall around the border of the winter biome and have 4 entrences in and out of it from west, east, north and south, just an idea on that dev but i am up for the 1.3 by far because i am really getting tired of the map | |

| I'll have to vote for waiting - I've already made most of my reasons for doing so.
These reasons include the loss of projects (and seriously, we were supposed to see a copy of the PRIOR map up for download so we could continue our projects in Single Player - never happened and frankly pisses me off a bit that people are so passive about that sort of thing), the fact that some of us use mods that can take an ADDITIONAL few weeks to nearly a MONTH to occur (thus LOCKING US OUT OF THE SERVER until they are done) ....
And this whole thing about resources being all but gone?
Bollocks.
I have copies of every prior map that Nere uploaded. I have mods I use on those maps which allow me to take a detailed look at the builds and any redstone wiring without the need to break into the walls (yes, I use X-Ray for single player). On each and every map change, one of the reasons was the "lack of resources".
Each and every map still had plenty of resources to go around.
Need more land? How many people have essentially left the server now? How many people have utterly abandoned buildings and such?
Tear. Them. Down.
Yes, I'm feeling a bit ranty at the moment. I've had my own projects that I have essentially stopped because there's no bloody point. I know at least two users who left over the continual map switches.
I think it's bloody wonderful that some are getting bored or have done everything they've wanted to do. Yep, we'd "have to switch eventually" .... No offense, I've looked over some of the "features" of 1.3 (not bothered to download it to try it directly). The only one that really interests me AT ALL? Tripwires.
Emerald Ore - whoo, another utterly useless thing added in that won't see much use.
Villager trading system - seriously? Useful for single player only.
Larger biomes - Great, just what I needed, dying constantly in the same fracking desert before ever having a fracking chance to do anything else!
The list goes on and on ....
I'll end it with this: As of right now, with Mojang's fiddling around and removal of a true SSP mode .... some of us might not be able t handle the extra memory overhead while they fine tune everything.
We'll see how many people are actually able to come back.
Me?
I'd have less of a fracking issue if I had access to a map I could monkey with during down times or creative lulls. I have and use Magic Launcher for this exact reason: I have copies of MC back to b1.6.6. I remember roughly which maps used which version. I will actually go into these maps using the older copies of MC and play on them/ finish up projects/monkey with what is there.
I'll stop there before I lose myself and actually let out an expletive.
You now know where I stand on this issue. | |

| Atra, if I'm interpreting this correctly, it seems one of your points against moving to a new map is to wait for your mods to update. That's fine, but I don't see what it has to do with changing maps. Once the server's plugins update, the server will update. It will occur whether we change maps or not. The only locking out I can see is if you update as soon as 1.3 is released. However, I doubt the mods that take weeks or months to be update will be ready when 1.3 is released.. So really, there's no point for a mod user to update that early. You could just update to 1.3 when the server updates and play on the server while you wait for your mods to update.
How do we know if a person has left for good, though? We won't know until they actually mention it somewhere. Just by scanning this forum, I don't seem to see any (or many) topics about quitting. I do know a few users that have left, through word of mouth. I really don't think tearing down their houses will generate enough space to be worthwhile, especially if all the buildings are scattered.
As a whole, the map does have plenty of materials left. However, I find I am having to go out farther to find some materials such as glowstone. This is even more troublesome for users without access to any warp commands.

| Well, personally, I don't really mind a new map for 1.3.
I'm looking forward to easier enchanting and larger biomes. Being able to build in, say, a snow biome and only seeing snow biome stuff all around is going to be cool (no pun intended). Right now, you build in a biome, and you're penned in by like 5 other biomes, some of which don't always go together (jungle biome next to a snow biome next to a desert biome next to plains... blah) | |

| Ima - I cannot play MC without Optifine.
That can take weeks to update - and thus, no, I cannot update and play on the server until Optifine updates.
How do you know if someone has left for good? They either say so (be it on the forum or in game before leaving) or they have not been on in months. | |
